I get asked often if I do search engine optimization. My answer is tricky. Smart search engine key words and links are recommended in social media posts. Rather than answer the question as; "well kind of".  Instead I simply explain how they fit together.

Here is how SEO and social media fit together.

  •  Optimizing social media profiles to include a business brick and mortar address, a phone number, name and specific service offering descriptions will capitalize on local search engine results for your type of business.  According to HubSpot "focuing on local SEO ensures you're the first business a lead sees when they're looking for a business like yours in their zip code".
  • Google's search algorithm is smarter. It rewards stellar content for readers. Basic SEO isn't a mysterious task that marketers are unaware of. The keyword research is free and available, use Google's keyword optimization tool.
  • As the chart above highlights, social and SEO have a circular relationship. Social postings and profiles are indexed by search engines.  If social network posts and descriptive profiles are created with SEO keyword and quality content, there is a mutual benefit evident in the diagram. Increases in search related traffic awareness should occur resulting in sharing of quality content.
Opinions and positions vary widely concerning SEO versus social, I'll let you decide which is better.

My focus stretches between the two, neither SEO or social is neglected.

I think it all depends on what you’re doing. For websites, SEO is an absolute necessity. For blog posts… depends.

I tend to freestyle, and if I’m talking about a specific topic I don’t worry about it because I figure that whatever phrase someone might decide to use that helps them find my blog is easier for them to come up with than for me to try to sculpt my words to specific phrases.

However, if I’m writing an educational or teaching post, I try to make sure the title and topic match, which does become a SEO thing, and I try to have a specific phrase that I figure someone might type into a search engine, such as “This is how you do XXXXX to get XXXXX to work.” At that point anything else I write will support the phrase.

Yes Mitch, I’ve been ready a lot lately about the division between SEO and social. There were fewer articles on the integration of the two which is what prompted my post. I too freestyle when I write and ignore the desire to stuff keywords or sculpt phrases. Better writing results as evident in your positively crafted posts. [I’m a fan] Thank you for commenting.
