Here are the links I promised you on the important topic of kids and social media, knowledge is good.

Kids can talk in acronyms. I think it’s related directly to the increase of texting, lol, lmao, and ikr. Social media usage often includes abbreviations and I use them in a familiar casual conversation myself.

Google has a great summary web site aptly named the Google Family Safety Center. This link offers advice on safety issues that I know can be concerning to parents.

Maria, great post along with your Part 1! It is amazing how many parents do not know what their kids are doing on the web, including social networking sites. Between web searches, sharing programs, social media, games, and everything else on the web, they can definitely get into a lot of things that are less than desirable. I’m sure many parents would be horrified if they knew exactly what their kids were doing on the internet.

Parents definitely have to set rules for their kids and follow through with them. They should make sure they have all of their kids’ login information for each site that they’re on, including their email. Parents should also look into getting some computer monitoring software like PC Pandora, which I have installed on some clients’ computers for their homes. This is a great tool that can tell you exactly what everyone on the computer(s) are doing. Looking forward to your next post!
